Our first winter in Maine was remarkably beautiful and dramatic. Ten foot snow drifts towered above the drive of our harbor-front “summer” rental, where we huddled by the inadequately small wood stove and marveled at it all. One cold December night a neighbor stopped by with a gift -- two amaryllis bulb growing kits. We planted them according to the directions, put them in a sunny windowsill and waited patiently while they grew -- first the bright green stems that contrasted so beautifully against all the white snow outside the window, and then, finally, the stark red blooms with their white markings. Those blooms did so much to cheer us through the cold winter. A symbol of friendship, of hope, of the promise that spring always comes.

This is a five-color woodcut. Each color of the image was carved in reverse from baltic birch plywood, then inked and printed using hand pressure and a baren. Five colors = five different birch blocks, each inked and printed individually. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist.  There may be slight variations between prints because of the nature of the hand-printing process. Each unframed print is packaged in a clear acid-free envelope.
