This piece actually merges several sketches from various time periods in my life. The eagle statue (and its’ twin) sits atop a deck railing overlooking the Agamenticus Yacht Club in York Harbor, Maine. To me, it always seemed a bit too regal for its’ location, which intrigued me enough to make a sketch of it. Much later, as I was contemplating making a print from this sketch, I realized how much it reminded me of a watercolor I had done of a statue in Vienna, Austria. It was that bleak Austrian winter scene -- with its’ bare trees and grey landscape -- that inspired the web of branches in the final print. I love how two very different memories have merged together to create a new image, all because I took the time to sketch and record my observations at each particular moment in time.
This is a four-color woodcut. Each color of the image was carved in reverse from baltic birch plywood, then inked and printed using hand pressure and a baren. Four colors = four different birch blocks, each inked and printed individually. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist. There may be slight variations between prints because of the nature of the hand-printing process. Each unframed print is packaged in a clear plastic acid-free envelope.
