This piece came about during a woodcut workshop. Each student had the opportunity to choose a vintage engraving to use as a base for practicing carving techniques on MDF board. As I was carving the image from the center out, I took a test rubbing and was really surprised by the way the octopus seemed to be emerging from the depths. It reminded me of images taken with underwater video cameras in the deep sea -- that moment when a sea creature appears out of the darkness into the light of the camera. I decided at once that was how the piece should remain. Many thanks to the great engraver Jules Trousset and his “Octopus Vulgaris”, image dated 1891, Paris.
This is a one-color woodcut. The image was carved in reverse from MDF board, then inked and printed using hand pressure and a baren. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist. There may be slight variations between prints because of the nature of the hand-printing process. Each unframed print is packaged in a clear plastic acid-free envelope.
