My family and I have become amateur birders. It began innocently enough, with the installation of a single bird feeder in our yard. But that winter when the snow came, the birds came also. Enticed by the cheerful sight of birds chirping outside the window, our routine began to alter to include time watching birds, field guide in hand, trying to determine the names of our new feathered guests. Before we knew it our fascination had grown into a full fledged birding obsession involving multiple feeders and bird houses, long walks with binoculars, and hours spent studying bird books. Soon, birds became the favorite subject of our many creative projects as well, finding their way into drawings, paintings and wood carvings. Given this, I guess it was perhaps inevitable that I should start a series of woodcuts featuring some of my favorite Maine birds...

The first bird in the series is the black capped chickadee, the state bird of Maine. This is one of the most agreeable birds at my bird feeder. I love watching pairs of them flit and flicker through the woods, their calls filling the air with a chorus of "hey, sweetie."

This is a 1-color woodcut. They may have slight variations as is the nature of the hand-printing process. Each unframed print is packaged in a clear plastic acid-free envelope.
